“If you had told me five years ago that I would be working in insurance, I probably would have laughed at you,” says Scott DeFillippo.

Before coming to AIG two years ago, he had built a successful career as a video producer and photographer, including an eight-year stint at Consumer Reports. He also had – and still has – a thriving family photography and video business.

But when he learned of an opportunity to join AIG as a Digital Video Producer, he was intrigued by the chance to showcase its people, and to help visually tell the story of the company’s turnaround.

“It’s really interesting to see how much respect and loyalty there is here,” Scott says. “We’re a big finance company, and I want to help people see that we do have the best interest of our clients in mind and that we really do care.”

Equally as appealing was AIG’s commitment to looking after its employees’ personal as well as professional well-being. His current role gives him the flexibility to work from home, as needed, giving him the chance to spend more time with his three young girls.

That’s taken on even greater meaning in the past year, as Scott’s doctor told him that his lifelong weight issues were now life-threatening. It was the wake-up call he needed and he set a goal to lose enough weight to ride the roller coasters with his daughters by years end – just in time for his family’s Disney vacation.

Fortunately for Scott, his doctors identified that he had what they called “a broken thermostat” which could be addressed surgically. He would still need to work hard to reach and maintain a lower weight, but he could get back on track.

“The prospect of not being there for my children was pretty eye-opening,” Scott says. “But now I am halfway through my weight loss journey and I feel amazing. I’m not exhausted all the time. I can play with my kids without losing my breath. Those are tangible things that make my life better.”

Scott credits AIG with providing employer sponsored health benefits that covered the procedure, but said the emotional support he received from AIG and his colleagues played just as big of a role in turning his health around.

“I am really excited to work for a company that values its employees and the lives they choose to lead.”

Growing up in a small town in India, Priya Kumar was fortunate to have parents who believed in providing equal opportunities for education in a society where girls were not always given priority.

“Their sacrifices and support in my future instilled in me values that molded me tremendously,” shared Priya. “It’s set the foundation for my life.” Priya completed her bachelor’s degree in Computer Application and Mathematics at Patna Women’s College, Patna. She went on to get her MBA in Finance and Technology from Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore, where she was one of 30 female students in her class of 180 candidates.

For Priya, problem-solving has always been at the core of everything she does. And she learned early on in her career that while finance is an important function in any organization, technology is the true backbone of the future economy.

Before moving to the AIG Investments Public Equity team as Head of Operations, Priya led the Front Office Technology function for AIG Investments, managing and helping to streamline the entire trading workflow. She and her team drastically reduced analytics processing times by using cloud technologies for high performance computing.

Building on this technology suite and adding machine learning to the mix, her team is now helping build out the quant and research trading platform for Public Equities.

Having a tangible impact on business outcomes through technology solutions is what makes Priya enjoy coming to work. But through each step in her career, she’s consistently seen a scarcity of females in her profession. “The small number of females always bothered me,” she shared. “And so that’s why I’ve always gravitated towards helping young girls pursue their true potential.”

In her spare time, Priya mentors high school girls through Girls Who Code and tutors first graders through AIG’s partnership with TutorMate. She also supports “Invisible Girl Project,” an organization that sponsors education and meals for young girls in India.

A mother of two daughters, Priya always encourages them to pursue their passions. And with two packed schedules of sports events, Priya values her work flexibility. She’s able to manage her workload to meet deadlines and still make it to each of their tournaments.

“AIG’s culture really gives you the confidence that you’re in the right place,” Priya says. “And it shows you that they’ll do the right thing for your career.”
